WASHINGTON-There is no real trend in mergers except that they keep coming, Callahan & Associates recently reported. There have been about 1,411 credit union mergers in the last five and a half years with the majority of the merged institutions, 52%, having less than $2 million in assets (See chart). Just 21 credit unions over $50 million in assets, or 1.5% of mergers, were involved in mergers in the last five years. According to Callahan's, mergers really are not steadily rising or falling. In 1999, there were 393 mergers, but in 2001, there were only 230. Last year had 267 and this year is trending slightly higher at 91 through April.
