NSB KINGS BAY, Ga.-For Navy Federal Credit Union Assistant Branch Manager aboard the NSB Kings Bay Laura Williams, triathlons and marathons were not entirely meeting her need to challenge herself. So at 42, after going to cheer on some friends at a bodybuilding competition, she became determined to get involved herself. Training full-time from October through the competition on June 5, Williams was able to capture two titles at the Southern Isles Bodybuilding Competition at Armstrong University in Savannah, Ga. She won in the over 40 and, at five foot and 93 pounds, lightweight competitions. Her body fat went down around 10%. “I just enjoy the way the body looks,” Williams said of her newfound passion. Though she plans to train for a bodybuilding competition again next year, Williams said for this year, “This was a one-time shot. There’s one coming up at the end of July, but there’s not enough rest and recovery time.” Between the brutal two hours in the gym every day plus going home and doing sit-ups or riding the stationary bike while watching television with her husband and the diet mostly consisting of a little bit of turkey and rice every three hours for seven weeks, recovery is necessary. Besides, she will need to train for the Jacksonville Marathon in December. While Williams says she has always been physically active, which kept her out of the house and out of trouble when she was young, she only got more serious about it in the last four to five years. “I couldn’t do it without the support from my husband,” she said.
