WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Is overdraft protection helping members or hurting them? While many debate that issue, the issue of regulating overdraft programs is also becoming a subject of debate. Some feel the time has come for financial regulators to rein in advertising on overdraft programs and tie an annual percentage rate to the product. Some overdraft vendors say if CUs had to follow lending-like regulations it would be very difficult to offer the product to members. That leads to the next Credit Union Times online voting poll question. It reads as follows: Overdraft protection has been under the regulatory microscope of late. Some believe the service, which covers a member’s bounced check for a fee, should carry with it an annual percentage rate like those seen on lending products. Others feel that overdraft protection programs shouldn’t be aggressively marketed by credit unions as they can encourage bounced checks.
