DEARBORN, Mich. – DFCU Financial has opened the doors to the first high school student-run credit union branch in Livonia, Michigan. Operated by students from the school’s Business Education Department under the guidance of DFCU Financial staff members the DFCU Franklin HS branch will be open during lunch hours one day per week. “An alarming number of young people are in serious debt. It’s one of the top reasons students drop out of college,” said Wanda Smith, business teacher/DFCU Franklin High School branch coordinator. “We hope that by interacting with their fellow students in familiar surroundings students will be comfortable asking questions about financial services and learning how to make wise decisions.” To commemorate the event, the $1.6 billion credit union has donated $10,000 to the Livonia Public Schools Foundation. According to DFCU Financial the move is an opportunity to expand its longtime educational partnership with Livonia Public Schools while being a hands-on resource for the students’ financial literacy growth.
