WASHINGTON – During all the ceremony over the passing of former President Ronald Reagan earlier this month, a lot of ink was used to cover the events and his history. Of all the places Reagan had traveled, according to the Palm Beach Daily News, Palm Beach, Fla., was a particularly special place for him. The paper wrote a story on local dignitaries’ memories of the late president, including one where Former White House Chief of Staff Ken Duberstein remembered his boss wooing then Congressman Dan Mica (D-Fla.) on Reagan’s economic package. “Mica was on the fence about whether to vote for Ronald Reagan’s economic package, and he visited the White House for some friendly persuasion,” the Daily News quoted Duberstein as saying. “He did not commit to vote for [the president's position], but he called to say his kids were disappointed he wasn’t given any presidential jellybeans in the Oval Office. The president took a whole bunch of jellybeans out of his jar, put them in an envelope and sent them to Dan Mica for his kids. “Mica said, `I may not always agree with Ronald Reagan, but he sure knows how to take care of each and every congressman,’” Duberstein, who owns a vacation home in Palm Beach, recalled. While serving in Congress, Mica was appointed by President Reagan to be a congressional representative to the United Nations.
