DENVER – Embarking on a new program of neighborhood outreach, the $181 million New Horizons Community Credit Union has opened a new headquarters facility in an old KeyBank branch in south central Denver. The facility, opened June 1 and which houses senior management and the loan department, serves a “mixed socio-economic area” of the city and has already received a positive for its involvement in neighborhood projects, said Tom Gressman, president/CEO of the 19,000 member CU. Gressman head of the 70-year-old CU which formerly was a single sponsor for Gates Corp., a manufacturer of rubber goods, previously occupied space in a Gates building before moving to a community charter six years ago. New Horizons maintains three Denver branches and the new location “offers many growth opportunities to serve the Baker and Washington Park communities,” said Gressman. “As you may know, we were one of the first credit unions in Colorado to get a community charter after we fought back a court challenge from the bankers seven to eight years ago,” said Gressman noting that “landmark” is a source of pride for the CU. As part of its community outreach, New Horizons is offering a college scholarship award program for student members and is supporting a variety of charitable organizations, such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Gressman said the KeyBank office “became vacant a year ago” and was purchased in April 2003, but “under a non compete clause we had to wait a full year” before signage could go up. A grand opening celebration was slated for June 26, said the CU.
