ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico Credit Union League appears ready to drop “league” from its name and become an association. “We’re always busy in Santa Fe trying to explain to lawmakers what a League is, what we do and that that we’re a trade organization,” said Phyllis Crawford, chairman of the 56-member League. Hence, League members attending their annual convention here this weekend here will vote a bylaw change adopting the new nomenclature effective June 15, said Crawford adding that some legislators “even think the League is one credit union.” Crawford, who also is president/CEO of the $11 million Navajo Mine FCU in Kirtland, said research done by the League staff shows a handful of state leagues have made such a change. A year ago, for example, the former Pennsylvania League also made the switch to help with name recognition among both legislators and consumers. It is now called the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association. Crawford added that effective July 1, Navajo Mine FCU will have a new name – Four Corners FCU. That change, she said, reflects a broadened field of membership including public service workers and SEGs in a community of 6,000 in northwest New Mexico.
