MADISON, Wis. – The decision to go into small business lending for many credit unions comes down to whether they can compete with those who have been originating loans longer. This year’s CUNA’s Future Forum will include a session that asks `should credit unions explore small business lending.’ “The record growth of small businesses and the trend toward home offices can offer BIG opportunities for your credit union,” CUNA writes, adding that a 2003 report from Greenwich Associates indicates 86% of small-business owners are not satisfied with their financial institutions. Given this statistic, credit unions have “a prime opportunity to step in and offer winning services to members who are small-business owners” but “whether you’re considering entering the small-business market or already have done so, the central question is the same: How does your credit union compete, and how can it stand out in a market of formidable competitors?” CUNA’s Future Forum will take place Oct. 24-27 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
