MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Alert cardholders who observed that a notice on their ATM contained a misspelling helped stop a skimming scam at the ATM. According to a story in the Maryville Daily Times, the cardholders grew suspicious about a notice which read “due to recent fraud attempts at this ATM machine, we require you to swipe your card through the reader below before using the machine. We apologize for the inconvenience.” The cardholders still swiped their card, but one thought it odd that the word “apologize” in the notice had been spelled with two p’s. The cardholders called customer service for First Tennessee, the ATM’s owner, and discovered that the bank had not installed the device or the sign. Police are investigating the case, the bank said.
