Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union, West Lafayette, Ind. has raised over $7,000 for the March of Dimes. The PEFCU team was one of 80 teams participating locally in WalkAmerica. The three-mile walk attracted 903 participants and raised a total of $158,000 for the March of Dimes. Pacific Resource Credit Union, Los Angeles, has donated its time to team up with the Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic. Through its support, Pacific Resource CU seeks to increase access to the availability of mental health and other related services for thousands of disadvantaged and at-risk children, and their families, regardless of their insurance coverage or their ability to pay. In addition, the credit union has partnered with the non-profit California Community Partnership for the Prevention of Financial Abuse, which is dedicated to protecting the elderly from financial exploitation. St. Joseph's Credit Union, Biddeford, Maine, has hosted its first annual Polar Bear Challenge and raised nearly $6,000 for the Maine CU Campaign for Ending Hunger and Maine Special Olympics. The Polar Bear challenge is a virtual golf tournament. Some 52 "golfers" participated in the event. The funds were split evenly between both charities. Wescom Credit Union, Pasadena, Calif., has donated over 85 boxes and 78 bags of clothing to the Los Angeles Mission. The Los Angeles Mission is a nonprofit organization serving the homeless living on the streets of downtown Los Angeles. The mission provides three hot meals served three times a day, overnight shelter, clean clothing, showers, and temporary baggage storage. Gesa Credit Union, Richland, Wash., has recently contributed donations totaling nearly $1,300 to Junior Achievement of the Greater Tri-Cities. Eleven employees raised money for their annual fund-raising event, Wild West Bowl, by selling jean coupons to staff, holding a bake sale and through individual donations. Gesa CU also donated an item for the event's silent auction. Junior Achievement is the nation's oldest and largest economics education program. Johns Manville Credit Union, Littleton, Colo., helped Girl Scouts from eight Littleton troops ship 900 boxes of Girl Scout cookies and hand-written notes to Colorado National Guard members in Iraq. Johns Manville CU donated funds to cover the postage. Lockheed Federal Credit Union, Burbank, Calif., has sponsored the P-38 National Association's event. The event was held on the runway at Burbank's Bob Hope International Airport, and included a rare fly-in of a fully operational P-38 plane, with passenger Flora Bell Reece, one of the few females who actually flew in combat. The plane was built by Lockheed at their Burbank plant in and is credited with helping win WWII and known for making significant contributions to aviation technology world-wide. The P-38 National Association is an organization devoted to supporting and preserving aviation history. TruWest Credit Union, Tempe, Ariz., has sponsored the 22nd Annual Schlotzsky's Bun Run to benefit Austin Sunshine Camps. TruWest CU employees were on hand to help out during the event and even participated in the race.
