PHOENIX, Ariz. and DAYTON, Ohio – Desert Schools FCU and Universal 1 CU are the two newest credit unions to accept the Matricula Consular Card as a form of member identification. Desert Schools VP/Chief Information Officer Rondle Amstutz said the credit union's research division spent more than a year investigating the legitimacy of the card, including speaking with a variety of businesses and government agencies, before deciding to accept the card. The credit union is only allowing the card to be used for savings or checking account. The card is one of seven forms of identification that can be used when joining the credit union. So far, less than 75 applicants have used the Matricula card to join the CU. Universal 1 CU is one of the few Dayton-based financial institutions that currently accept the Matricula card. The Mobile Mexican Consulate from Indianapolis registered more than 700 Mexicans in the city in late April for the Matricula cards.
