Looking back seven years finds credit unions scoring a victory in Colorado to defeat a bill that would have restricted access to credit unions by consumers here and limited field of membership expansion by state-chartered credit unions. HB-1338 was killed in the House Business Affairs and Labor Committee unanimously by a vote of 13 to 0. Also in that issue the Credit Union Campaign for Consumer Choice shifted into high gear. As part of the campaign, the Mississippi CU League responded to the American Bankers Association’s “Quacks like a Duck” ads that promote credit union taxation under the guise that “credit unions that want to be like everyone else.should pay taxes like everyone else.” The league immediately launched its own ad featuring a fake wooden duck with the definition of the word “decoy: a means to mislead or trap” that went on to point out tax subsidies and the credit union difference. “Until we saw the duck ad we hadn’t had any attacks from the banks here. So there was nothing to light a fire under us. This was an awakening for us,” said MCUL Vice President Kim Case. “We wanted to bring out the theme that we may look like a duck but we’re not a duck and we’re not trying to be one.”
