Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union, Gaithersburg, Md., staffers have donated their time to participate in the Upper Montgomery County YMCA’s Healthy Kid’s Day Celebration. The annual event focuses on encouraging kids to be healthy in spirit, mind, and body from eating right and exercising regularly, to rejecting drugs and alcohol. Over 400 people attended the event. Credit Union Association of Oregon, Eugene, has hosted its first Miracles in March fundraiser and raised over $5,600 to support the local Children’s Miracle Network and Doernbeckers Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Oregon Community Credit Union organized the fundraiser with participation from several other credit unions of the Willamette Chapter of the Credit Union Association of Oregon (CUAO) including Laneco Credit Union, Northwest Community Credit Union, Pacific Cascade Federal Credit Union, and Register Guard Credit Union. To help raise the funds, the credit unions sold green paper clouds for $1.00 each to members and they could include the name of a loved one if they chose. The paper clouds were displayed throughout over a dozen branches in the Eugene and Springfield area of Oregon. Pacific Service Credit Union, Walnut Creek, Calif., has donated funds to purchase a computer, printer and materials needed by the Vallejo Police Activities League (PAL) for its Youth Director Council program. The program provides leadership opportunities for Vallejo youths age 12 to 18 as they volunteer in the community and serve with adult board members in making decisions for Vallejo PAL activities. Maine State Employees’ Credit Union, Augusta, has donated $25,000 to help complete the Kennebec River Rail Trail, a 6.5-mile pathway for walking and cycling between Gardiner and Augusta. The credit union is one of two lead donors for the project, which needs to raise $160,000 by the end of March. So far $110,000 has been raised. Workers’ Credit Union, Fitchburg, Mass., has donated over 2,600 new and gently used children’s books to the Squannacook Elementary School Students for Books drive. The goal of the book drive is to give the gift of reading to children and their families who don’t have the resources to purchase books of their own. In recognition of their effort, Workers’ CU has also donated funds to be used toward the purchase of a school digital camera. Gesa Credit Union, Richland, Wash., has raised $925 through the sale of Cookie Books for the Tri-Cities and Walla Walla food banks. The Cookie Books were created by Gesa’s Marketing Department and contain recipes that were submitted entirely by Gesa staff members. Books were available at all five of Gesa’s locations in Richland, Kennewick, Pasco, West Richland and Walla Walla for a $2 donation.
