MCUL, Michigan CUs Promote Financial Literacy

NORTHVILLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – According to the Michigan Credit Union League, April is Michigan Youth Financial Literacy Month and credit unions here are teaming up with the Michigan Legislature to help kids earn their “financial literacy” degrees. Dubbed the “Financial Literacy Legislative Challenge” by authors state Senators Mike Bishop (R-Rochester), Wayne Kuipers (R-Holland) and Representatives Brian Palmer (R-Romeo) and Marc Shulman (R-West Bloomfield), credit unions and lawmakers will co-present financial programs in schools and student credit union branches around the state. In addition to CU Youth Week activities April 18-24, credit unions here will also be participating in the Federal Reserve Bank’s “Money $mart Week”. Slated for April 22-30, Money $mart Week features more than 150 free financial education events for consumers – 26 of which will be CU-hosted. The MCUL and Michigan State Cooperative Extension will also host a free teacher training for educators April 22 based on the National Endowment for Financial Education’s High School Financial Planning Program.
