AURORA, Colo. – CNN recently shone the spotlight on Gateway Credit Union’s financial literacy efforts with high school students. The $175 million credit union’s Kent Denver School branch was recently featured on CNN as “America’s Bright Future.” The program featured the credit union along with the students who run it and high school math teacher Donna Serrano, who was instrumental in starting the high school branch. With some $2 million in assets, it is now the largest student run credit union in the nation. The student credit union is governed by the bylaws of Gateway CU and state regulators. Students serve internships and are interviewed by the senior teller, then selected by a democratic voting process. The student CU has become quite the popular workplace with some 92 applicants vying for credit union positions for the 2004-2005 term. During summer vacation students keep up their skills by working at Gateway CU’s main branch. Gateway CU’s Kent Denver School branch was also featured in a Money Magazine article, which focused on Serrano’s financial impact on students and the school. The students report that over time their attitude toward money and their feeling of control over finances has grown.
