WASHINGTON-The American Bankers Association has learned that criminals are using their name in an attempt to obtain financial information from consumers via e-mail. ABA is warning all consumers that the e-mail is not from them, nor would ABA ever request such information. The scam is similar to the one that has affected the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. recently. Credit unions have also been attacked by impostors setting up copycat Web sites to steal member information and money. According to ABA, the “phishy” e-mail states that the recipient is a customer of an ABA member bank, describes a new “security policy,” and requests personal financial information such as social security and credit card numbers. The banking trade group is working with law enforcement officials to identify the source of the e-mails and disrupt transmission. ABA advised consumers to: * Never give out financial information unless you initiated the contact; * If you have responded to this false email, contact your financial institution immediately; and * Forward fraudulent emails that use ABA’s name to [email protected].
