LATHAM, N.Y. – The New York State Credit Union League has designated March as time for New York credit union leaders to step up their meetings with their state and federal legislators, right in their hometowns. During March, each member of the League’s board of directors will lead at least one legislative visit, either with a state or federal legislator, together with the League’s district presidents. They will also identify and recruit credit union representatives from within their districts to participate in these planned legislative meetings. The New York League said the “timely visits hold much potential for strengthening support among elected officials” for credit unions, considering recent remarks made by House Ways & Means Committee Chairman Bill Thomas, the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act of 2003 which is gaining co-sponsors, the bankruptcy bill seeing new attention in Congress, and a variety of state legislative priorities facing New York credit unions.
