FAIRCHILD, Wis. – While some smaller credit unions have decided to merge, Wisconsin's smallest continues to remain independent. Fairchild Credit Union in Fairchild, Wis., had assets of $80,689 as of December 31, 2003. Mabel Habermeyer, who calls herself its president and janitor, says the credit union began in 1962. She has operated it out of her home for more than 40 years. Habermeyer said that while the credit union doesn't offer many services beyond its savings and loans, it is convenient for many in that small western Wisconsin community because it'sopen evenings, Saturdays or Sundays – whenever members need service and Habermeyer is home. "We've been approached a number of times about merging," she said, "but as long as we can hang on and serve the local people," the credit union will continue. Fairchild Credit Union now has 125 members and averages about 30 loans on the books. It recently added its 499th member since its start.
