The column above is the 714th consecutive weekly publisher's column appearing in the pages of each issue of Credit Union Times. The first was written when volume one, number one, made its debut way back on March 26, 1990. That means that in a few days, Credit Union Times will be marking its 14th anniversary. Aside from the publisher's column, almost everything else has changed during the past 14 years since that first modest issue of 16 pages and seven display ads. A couple of examples: today's Credit Union Times runs between 44 and 140 pages a week. It contains more paid display and classified advertisements than all other credit union publications combined. The editorial product is vastly larger and more comprehensive. Also, each issue is printed on superior grade paper stock. The printer has only a day and one-half turnaround time. Top of the line graphics, photos, charts, and statistical data are now part of every issue. In 2004, our readers (approximately 50,000) have much higher expectations than did the handful of initial subscribers. Thus, CU volunteers and staff are much more choosy about what they are willing to pay for and take their time to read. Despite all our growth, today the staff of Credit Union Times numbers in total only two more than those paid to put out issues in 1990. Only the publisher remains from the original staff roster. How do we plan on celebrating our 14th anniversary? By putting out another weekly issue of must reading for credit unions and all those that help make them so successful. [email protected]
