PURCHASE, N.Y. – MasterCard saw its transaction volume in the U.S. grow by 5.8% in 2003 as the numbers of MasterCard branded cards in the U.S. grew by 1.9% to almost 272.6 million card, MasterCard reported. MasterCard cardholders used their cards in 7.4 billion transactions which generated $636.8 billion in volume, the Association added. “An increase in purchase volume of nearly 10% in the U.S. indicates continued solid MasterCard momentum, especially considering that the U.S. economy last year was unpredictable at best,” said Ruth Ann Marshall, president of the Americas, MasterCard International.
