Credit Union Card Performance Faltering

Despite more credit unions paying increased attention to managing their card portfolios, credit union card portfolios still largely languished in 2003, according to NCUA’s call report data for the year. AssetExchange, a leading broker of credit union card portfolios, also illustrated some of these faltering trends in a recent report. The trends show that credit card accounts still lag other forms of credit union lending, but that larger credit unions were more able to keep their card portfolios growing. Further, credit unions saw a decrease in a total number of card accounts while both Visa and MasterCard saw an increase in accounts overall. But as overall card penetration stalled, delinquencies declined and credit union card account quality remained high overall. The following charts are from AssetExchange’s recent report.
