Raleigh, N.C.- State Employees' Credit Union has donated $1,667 to North Carolina's nine psychiatric hospitals and mental retardation centers in an effort to help fund much needed projects. The total amount raised by various organizations of more than $15,000 was provided by sales of the publication, Triumph at Kitty Hawk, which tells of the Wright brothers' exploits at Kitty Hawk from a North Carolina perspective. Through a collaborative effort with the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, Division of Archives and History, the publications were made available statewide to credit union members in SECU's network of 165 branches. Recipients of the funds were four psychiatric hospitals and five mental retardation centers, which provide facilities to diagnose/treat persons with psychiatric disorders and provide residential care/specialized treatment to individuals who have severe mental retardation and significant medical needs. These hospitals/centers operated by the state Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services collectively care for some 7,120 patients/residents.
