BOISE, Idaho-A Cease and Desist Order was issued Feb. 13 by the Idaho Department of Finance against two individuals attempting to scam consumers out of money or personal information using a phony credit union. Jonathan Mecray and Jennifer Crenshaw have attempted to place advertisements in at least two Idaho newspapers for `America's Choice Credit Union.' The fake institution is claiming it can help people obtain loans. Mecray and Crenshaw even presented the papers with a phony business license supposedly from the Idaho Department of Finance. "The name `America's Choice Credit Union' is being used by these persons to perpetrate a fraud upon Idaho consumers," Idaho Department of Finance Director Gavin Gee said in an official statement. "Although America's Choice Credit Union is a legitimate credit union operating in California, it has not been approved to operate in Idaho, has not been issued a business license by the Department, and is in no way connected to this fraud. This is apparently an attempt by these individuals to obtain either personal information or unlawful advance-fees from Idaho consumers, or otherwise illegally part Idahoans from their money."
