WASHINGTON-NCUA Chairman Dennis Dollar denied speculation in a Roll Call article, a newspaper that covers Capitol Hill, that he may consider a run for the U.S. House of Representatives should Mississippi’s 4th district open up. The article points out that eight-term incumbent Gene Taylor (D) has easily won the seat for many years, winning 79% of the vote in 2000, even as President George W. Bush slammed Al Gore in the district. Dollar ran as Taylor’s toughest competitor ever in 1996, winning 40% of the vote. In addition to Dollar, Federal Reserve New Orleans branch Board Member Dave Dennis and State Representative Mark Formby were also named as potential Republican candidates if the seat opens up. According to the article, the Democrats have little hope of holding the seat if Taylor leaves it. Dollar told Credit Union Times, “I hear from folks back home in Mississippi quite often who are interested in my returning home to run for public office after my tenure at NCUA comes to an end and I am always flattered by their vote of confidence, but I am making absolutely no plans to seek political office now or in the future. While it’s always humbling to be mentioned prominently among those who might have something to offer as a future candidate for political office, my opportunities after NCUA presently under consideration are much more likely to be in the private sector than in the political arena as a candidate.” He added that it remains his intention to retire from political candidacy “batting .500,” having won two of his four campaigns.
