WASHINGTON – Delegates to CUNA’s 2004 GAC who plan to meet with congressional representatives, will have ready access to lobbying do’s and don’ts, right from their hotel rooms. CUNA has produced a 15-minute video on lobbying techniques that will be broadcast on the in-room TV networks that appear in the four major hotels housing GAC attendees – the Washington Hilton Towers, Capital Hilton, Omni Shoreham, and the Marriott Wardman Park. The video includes an introduction by CUNA President/CEO Dan Mica, and three skits by key members of CUNA’s GAC staff, as well as professional actors. The skits focus on what’s acceptable – and what’s not – in getting a message effectively to members of Congress. The video also features an interview with Rep. Paul Kanjorski (D-Pa.) who offers the perspective on lobbying from a congressman’s point of view and his expectation in meeting with constituents. The video make three key points – be on time; be prepared; and strive to provide a different prospective quickly, professionally, and graciously. CUNA VP of Political Affairs Richard Gose said the advice offered in the video is just as applicable when CUs visit with state legislators. “In fact,” he said, “a modified version will be a component of a broader four-day lobbying, grassroots and political action module we’re preparing for credit union professionals and volunteers.”
