Utah CU Testing Anti-Theft Teller Device

SANDY, Utah – In a move designed to discourage robberies, the $64 million Credit Union One said its newly-opened north Temple branch is equipped with a new computer-driven currency device they say is a first in Utah, which eliminates the need for a cash teller drawer. The “Teller Cash Recylcer,” operated by tellers, can both receive cash deposits and deposit currency, but tellers have no access to cash within the machine beyond single computerized transactions. Each teller has a computer screen and a drop box for checks but all cash is within the TCR, which acts as its own safe, said Credit Union One which acquired the product from De La Rue Cash Systems of Watertown, Wis. “This branch which formerly was an old bank branch is in an area that has experienced a high number of robberies, and so we are testing this device to see how it works,” said Kent Hodson, president and CEO.
