RALEIGH, N.C. – That $500,000 credit union fund-raising campaign in the Carolinas to raise funds for Actor Paul Newman’s “Victory Junction Gang Camp” is way ahead of schedule hitting the $344,000 mark, according to Steve Elam, executive director of the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation. The Foundation, representing the North and South Carolina Credit Union Leagues, has been waging a well-publicized charity campaign since early 2003 to help build medical cabins and a spiritual center on the “Victory Junction” camp slated to open this June in Randelman, N.C. The camp is for needy youngsters suffering crippling illnesses and is part of the actor’s “Hole In the Wall” charity foundation in Connecticut. “We’re thrilled to see so many fund-raising projects underway at credit unions across North and South Carolina,” said Elam. The latest included donated tickets to yesterday’s Super Bowl game worth $3,000 given by an anonymous contributor – a “credit union related corporation which asked not to be identified,” said Elam. The “Victory Junction” project, which also has active involvement of the Petty race car family, has been a popular charity for giving by CU members, noted the North Carolina League.
