No one keep really accurate statistics on the incidence of crime at ATMs. Police generally tend to file such attacks under aggravated assaults and therefore don’t break out their data that way, according to Zingher. CUNA Mutual, the insurer for 95% of credit unions in the U.S. confirmed that it counts ATM robberies as robberies only and doesn’t break them out, neither does the Federal Bureau of Investigation. However, a spokesman from the FBI did acknowledge, though not for the record, that the Bureau was aware of ATMs’ roles as sites for robberies. And certainly such cases appear in the media. A recent cursory search on the keywords ATM and robbery from on online news surface brought up reports in the previous 72 hours from Texas, Illinois, Massachusetts, Kentucky and Florida. Two of the cases involved abduction and kidnapping to the ATM for withdrawals, but both ended without anyone killed.
