Age: 54 Replaced: Yolanda Wheat Immediate Past Employment: Iowa State Senator, chair of the Senate Ways and Means Committee and the Commerce Committee Term: Expires August 2007 CUT: What do you think are your biggest accomplishments on the board so far? My term at the NCUA has been extremely rewarding as we have focused on numerous key areas of importance to the credit unions NCUA regulates and insures and to the over 80 million members of credit unions nationwide. The most overwhelming accomplishment is the high standards of safety and soundness which this board has remained diligently focused and committed in each decision. When I joined the NCUA Board, I had three areas of focus: 1) Emphasize the wise use of resources; 2) Make certain that NCUA's core duties are done extremely well; maintaining a robust share insurance fund and an effective supervision program - critical elements to the independent credit union industry; and 3) Maintain an open door to the members of the credit union community and be a facilitator of solutions within the NCUA and the industry. *Wise Use of Resources I am pleased with the diligent work of NCUA's management and every employee for their commitment to the wise use of agency resources. Through the agency's Accountability In Management initiative (AIM), we have achieved a reorganization, allowing improved efficiency and streamlining of operations. Today, NCUA has less burdensome bureaucracy and more resources available to be utilized effectively. *Member Business Lending Member Business Lending (MBL) has been a leading priority of mine for the past two years. I am pleased with the recommendations by the internal working group I appointed to focus on areas to improve the MBL rule. Our action by revising the Member Business Lending regulations, enhances opportunities for credit unions to engage in business lending services, which are essential for opening the doors for small business owners across the country. Credit unions can play a vital role in providing their members with access to capital - in essence, helping grow the economy through a small business expansion and creating more jobs in their community. *Update to NCUA's Field of Membership Rules Another accomplishment is the update to the field of membership rules which will provide federal credit unions with options for growth and diversification within its field of membership. A viable federal charter strengthens the dual chartering system. *Enhanced and Electronic Communication NCUA has made great strides in improving communication with the credit union industry. I have been working to promote an electronic subscription service to be made available to the credit union community early this year. This initiative will reduce costs and improve delivery efficiency. CUT: What are your goals for remainder of time on the NCUA Board? As credit unions continue to grow and maintain outstanding financial performance, I will stay forward-looking, basing decisions on safety and soundness to allow credit unions to meet the changing financial needs of their membership. Wise use of agency resources will continue as a priority.
