CHICAGO – It’s always great to get new members, but when they come in droves and they’re nervous it can be challenging for any credit union. That’s just what one Chicago credit union is discovering. The 77th Street Depot Federal Credit Union, an almost $12 million dollar CU serving primarily Chicago transit workers has been almost swamped by the members of the former Archer Depot Credit Union, an $8.9 million credit union that NCUA closed and liquidated in December 2003. “It was a purchase and assume situation,” explained NCUA spokeswoman Molly Schar. All or almost all of the former Archer Depot accounts went to the 77th street credit union, she said. An employee at the credit union’s Foster Avenue branch declined to speak for the record but said that the credit union had been swamped with members ever since the change over and confirmed that many members had been concerned about the fate of their money in the switch. The credit union leadership and staff have been working to explain to credit union members that their savings are secure and that they have insurance, the employee said.
