WASHINGTON-CUNA President and CEO Dan Mica recently hit the airwaves to promote credit unions’ work toward financial literacy and the need for more financial education. Mica gave an interview, which was aired Dec. 21, on Shirley Rooker’s “Call for Action” radio show on WTOP in the Washington, D.C.-area. During the 30-minute interview, he discussed the differences between home equity lines of credit and home equity loans, the credit union difference, and CUNA’s work with the National Endowment for Financial Education. Mica explained that HELOCs are attractive because of their lower rates and tax-deductible interest payments, but that they are best used for important items like home improvements or college. He also discussed CUNA’s efforts to spread NEFE’s work into more high schools and to reach more students nationwide. In addition CUNA’s chief executive promoted holiday club accounts offered by many credit unions to help consumers prepare for the holiday season.
