There were a number of personnel moves at NCUA and in the Washington area worthy of mention. The following rundown highlights some of them. ICBA Veteran Packs it in WASHINGTON-Ken Guenther, president and CEO of the Independent Community Bankers of America, decided to retire as he approaches his 25th year at the banking trade association. Guenther announced that he would be retiring at the organization’s next annual convention in March 2004. Camden “Cam” Fine has been chosen as the president and CEO-elect. Guenther will continue consulting after his retirement. Guenther served at ICBA since 1979 and served in the top spot since 1982. NCUA Shifts ARDO to Office of Strategic Program Support and Planning ALEXANDRIA, Va.-This summer, NCUA Region II Associate Regional Director John Owen Cole, Jr., was announced as the agency’s new director of Office of Strategic Program Support and Planning. He is now responsible for providing expertise in investment and portfolio management and strategic planning. Prior to his service with NCUA, Cole was vice president of the Treasury Division at Riggs National Bank in Washington, D.C. He joined NCUA in 1993 as a corporate investment officer and has held various positions since then. He was promoted in 1998 to director of risk management and vice president/treasurer of the Central Liquidity Facility. Johnson Assistant Heads Back to Iowa; CUNA Staffer Briefly Fills the Spot ALEXANDRIA, Va.-Returning to the family support system she enjoys in Iowa, Julie Starnes, executive assistant to NCUA Vice Chair JoAnn Johnson, made the decision to leave NCUA. After Starnes left, former CUNA lobbyist Maura Hampton filled the role, but only for about five months. Johnson still has not named a permanent executive assistant. CUNA Adds Seasoned Lobbyists to Ranks WASHINGTON-CUNA started the year off by adding an experienced Beltway-insider to its staff Jan. 6. Though new to CUNA, Linda Gualtieri is no stranger to Capitol Hill; she replaced former CUNA Legislative Affairs Manager Maura Hampton, who left the trade organization Dec. 20, 2002. Before joining CUNA, Gualtieri served as legislative director for Congressman Felix Grucci (R-N.Y.) until he lost his reelection bid in 2002. Prior to that, Gualtieri performed legislative work for Congressman Peter King (R-N.Y.), who she had interned for in the past. Before her second stint in King’s office, Gualtieri interned in the press office of former Senate Banking Committee Chairman Alfonse D’Amato (R-N.Y.). Margaret Durbin Condrill, former minority chief counsel and staff director for the House Energy and Commerce Committee, also joined CUNA’s legislative team. Most recently, Condrill had lobbied for the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and prior to that she served her second stint at the American Council of Life Insurance for six years, before and after serving as minority chief counsel and staff director for the House Energy and Commerce Committee for seven years. Condrill had also previously lobbied for the American Insurance Association. Matz Picks Bosack as EA; Klavitter Steps in at CUNA WASHINGTON-CUNA Vice President of Information Services Steve Bosack, also vice president of public relations, made the switch from trade association to government service when he agreed to become NCUA Board Member Debbie Matz’ executive assistant. Bosack replaced Matz’ previous top aide, Nancy Smith, who retired. For the previous 10 years, he handled corporate communications, media relations, and other matters for CUNA. Meanwhile, on the CUNA front, David Klavitter, an editor and communication consultant for CUNA’s Center for Research and Advice, was named the group’s new vice president of information services. In this position, he will mainly be responsible for editing CUNA’s online news service News Now, which he did from 2000 to 2002, and Newswatch.
