CUNA Vice President of Political Affairs Richard Gose said that CUNA has always been aware that it has a strong grassroots network, but that Project Zip Code is really illustrating that for them. Through the program, which identifies how many credit union members live within a particular zip code, CUNA is harnessing those numbers and using it in their lobbying repertoire. Lawmakers can be told precisely how many voters in their districts are credit union members, which can help sway their thinking on an issue. At the end of 2002, Project Zip Code had captured 19,354,511 credit union members nationwide, according to CUNA Grassroots Manager Gretchen Graf. Currently the database is running around 42 million with 30 new credit unions being added each week, she said. The program was originally piloted in five states in 2001 and officially began in 2002. Gose said CUNA is looking into improvements for the software and expects to make an announcement after the first of the year. [email protected]
