When Hawaii Credit Union League President Dennis Tanimoto stopped by a friend's shop to pick up a Mont Blanc pen 20 years ago he had no idea that it would be the beginning of the hobby of a lifetime. "I needed to get ink for the pen so I stopped by a pen shop and when I saw the whole plethora of pens I was hooked," said Tanimoto. He has separated his collection of over 200 pens into three types-vintage, which go back as far as the 1800s; Limited edition pens; and what he calls the "workhorse" pens, which are typically used for daily correspondence. Tanimoto finds pens everywhere from specialty shops or antique shops to online at e-bay and says it is impossible to pick a favorite pen. "Each pen has its own characteristics and identity – some are better writers, some are more ornate and others are just classics not for the ability to write well but for their historical significance," said Tanimoto.
