WASHINGTON – The Department of Housing and Urban Development plans to make $25 million in "sweat equity" grants to low-income families that contribute at least 200 hours of their own labor to building or rehabilitating their own homes. HUD will award the $25 million to three organizations based on their experience in managing a sweat equity program: Habitat for Humanity International will receive $13.2 million; Housing Assistance Council will receive approximately $8 million; and the Northwest Regional Facilitators will receive about $3.9 million. The funding is being provided through HUD's Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP).
