WASHINGTON – CUNA President/CEO Dan Mica was recently elected chair of the National Osteoporosis Foundation. Mica’s election took place following the decision by the former chair, the Hon. Paul G. Rogers, to resign from his role. NOF was founded in 1984 and Rogers has served as the first NOF Chair since June 1985. Mica has served as a member of the NOF Board of Trustees since 2000. Mica worked closely with Rogers during their days as Florida House Representatives on several major public health issues including osteoporosis. Throughout his legislative career, Rogers, known by many as “Mr. Health,” introduced major legislation such as the National Cancer Act and the Research on Aging Act. “I have great respect for Paul Roger’s significant contribution to NOF and to the issue of osteoporosis,” Mica said. “His leadership and commitment has helped to establish the NOF as the national charitable organization focusing on osteoporosis, a disease that touches millions of Americans. I look forward to building upon his great work as NOF strives to reduce the impact and prevalence of osteoporosis through awareness, advocacy, education and research.” More than 44 million Americans, aged 50 and older, either have or are at risk for osteoporosis, the Foundation reports. NOF is a nonprofit, voluntary health organization dedicated to promoting lifelong bone health to reduce osteoporosis and associated fractures, while working to find a cure for the disease through programs of research, education and advocacy.
