NEW YORK – Nearly 60 New York and New Jersey credit union members, staff and association representatives celebrated International Credit Union Week and Day with a bang by gathering October 14, 2003, on the set of the Today show in Manhattan. The event, which was organized by the New York State Credit Union League's Metropolitan District, also garnered support from the New Jersey Credit Union League, the NCUA and the National Credit Union Foundation. “We are thrilled to have New Jersey participate in this effort to give credit unions a presence on national TV,” said event coordinator Tracy Sussmann, Vice President, Operations, Entertainment Industries FCU. “It's indicative of the true cooperative spirit of credit unions.” Henry Slootmaker, CEO, Peoples First Choice FCU added that, “It's important to make the public aware of credit unions – who we are and what we stand for. We had a good crowd, everyone was up early and we showed our support.” In addition to drawing camera attention, the credit union crowd handed “America's Credit Unions” branded T-shirts to Today show personalities Al Roker, Matt Lauer and Ann Curry. Special guest Deborah Gibson also signed autographs and posed for photos.
