CUMBERLAND, Maine – Some Main Street residents do not want any more businesses in their residential area and that includes Town & County Federal Credit Union. A business like the credit union is not allowed in the residential zone now, so South Portland, Maine-based Town & Country FCU is seeking a contract zoning agreement to build a branch here. The credit union would be in a 2,500-square-foot building that housed a medical practice. Currently, the surrounding area includes a mix of homes, schools, a convenience store, dental offices, and a flower shop. According to Town & Country FCU, if zoning is approved it will work to accommodate residents’ needs. In addition, a recent survey finds that 300 Cumberland residents want a financial institution in town. The issue is scheduled for a public hearing before the Town Council.
