ALEXANDRIA, Va.-NCUA Chairman Dennis Dollar recently hosted a meeting at the agency’s headquarters with the president’s top advisor on the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities to discuss the opportunities for credit union services and student recruitment. President George W. Bush’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities Chairman Dr. Louis W. Sullivan met with a dozen senior officials from NCUA to talk about bolstering the role of credit unions as career development opportunities for students and expanding branching of more campus credit unions. “We were pleased to welcome Dr. Sullivan to NCUA and establish a working dialogue on the importance of instilling career opportunities in the financial sector of America, as well as highlighting credit unions as an emerging source for many financial services needed by students, faculty, and staff at HBCUs,” Dollar said. He also wrote the presidents of all 105 HBCUs nationwide last year, informing them of the role credit unions can play to “establish a sound foundation for saving and wealth accumulation.” The Board of Advisors on HBCUs advises the president and the Secretary of Education on strengthening these institutions. Dr. Sullivan has been encouraged to coordinate with other federal agencies to further the success and impact of historically black educational institutions.
