HOUSTON, Texas – When census reports revealed that Houston’s population is 37% Hispanic and 25% African American, yet FDIC surveys reported that only 17% of banks are located in their communities-PrimeWay Federal Credit Union saw an opportunity to reach out to new members. PrimeWay FCU is literally taking its branches to the local underserved neighborhoods and minority communities. The credit union brings banking to neighborhoods in a custom $250,000 recreational vehicle redesigned with two ATMs, bulletproof teller windows, wireless computers and a satellite dish that connects to headquarters. In addition, the mobile branch allows the $180 million credit union to “test-drive” communities that have more check-cashing stores to see if the demand there can support a permanent location. The teller-driven truck made its debut during the popular local Fiestas Patrias parade and plans are underway to make regular visits to low- to moderate-income neighborhoods.
