WASHINGTON-The Credit Union Legislative Action Council, the political arm of CUNA, slowed its political campaign contributions considerably over the August recess. Overall last month, CULAC disbursed just $58,416.56, less than it has in recent past months. CULAC doled out more than $80,000 in July. While it would not be unusual for the multi-million political action committee to contribute $5,000 to a handful of campaigns in a month, candidates had no such luck in August. Representatives Adam Smith (D-Wash.) and Hilda Solis (D-Calif.) received the top dollars from CULAC in August at $2,500 a piece. Congressman Ken Calvert’s (R-Calif.) campaign was given $2,000, while Senator Conrad Burns (R-Mont.) and Congressman Scott Garrett (R-N.J.) each picked up $1,500. Lawmakers typically use the August recess for work in their home districts.
