WESTBROOK, Maine – During a Remembrance Ceremony held Sept. 10, credit unions here announced the establishment of a 9/11 Fund to benefit local Red Cross Chapters. "Maine's credit unions wanted to establish a permanent fund to honor the victims of 9/11 by contributing to our local Red Cross Chapters each year at this time. These funds are donated through the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger and are earmarked to help the Red Cross in Maine provide emergency food assistance to the hundreds of Mainers that are victims of a disaster each year," said Jon Paradise, director of communications for the Maine CUL. "We think this was an appropriate way to mark 9/11 on an annual basis, while making a difference in the year ahead here in Maine." Two years after 9/11, contributions to the Red Cross Chapters in Maine remain down. The ceremony concluded with each Red Cross representative lighting a remembrance candle and participating in a moment of silence.
