INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Credit Union League has extended well wishes to Gov. Frank O’Bannon and his family. O’Bannon suffered a massive stroke on Sept.8. O’Bannon,73, a Democrat in his second term, was found that Monday morning on the floor of his Chicago hotel room in his pajamas, the Associated Press reported. He was unconscious and near death when he was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. At press time, he remained in critical condition, in a drug-induced coma and on a ventilator. Indiana Credit Union League President John McKenzie considers O’Bannon “a friend and supporter of credit unions for as long as he has held elected office.” “His leadership as governor has benefited Hoosiers across the state including more than two million credit union members,” McKenzie said. Along with the rest of the state of Indiana and people throughout the country who know and respect him, our thoughts are with Governor O’Bannon and his entire family at this time.” Northwestern Spokeswoman Kelly Sullivan said doctors saw reflex movement that indicates brain damage. “It’s too soon to tell exactly the extent of the damage,” Sullivan said. Doctors said O’Bannon suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, a type of stroke caused by bleeding in the brain. Surgeons removed blood from both sides of O’Bannon’s brain during surgery on Monday, the AP reported. Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Joe Kernan has assumed O’Bannon’s duties as acting governor. Kernan became acting governor under a provision in the state constitution that allows him to temporarily carry on business without a formal transfer of power. O’Bannon was staying at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago to attend a conference of the Midwest U.S.-Japan Association.
