PHOENIX – Chicanos Por La Causa Federal Credit Union has launched a loan program to help immigrants here build credit. Members can apply for a loan using individual taxpayer identification numbers, (ITIN), in place of Social Security numbers. For the past 20 years, the credit union has helped new immigrants open checking and savings accounts by accepting matricula consular identification cards issued by the Mexican government. According to CEO Miguel Avila, fraud has not been a concern since combining matricula identification with an ITIN makes it possible to run credit reports on loan applicants. In addition, since January the $4.5 million credit union through a partnership with Premier Information Center, offers members a Spanish version of Experian credit reports. Avila says it is another way to help members build and protect their credit.
