ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Maura Hampton misses politics so bad she is leaving her position as Executive Assistant to NCUA Vice Chair JoAnn Johnson to get back in the political game. “I miss the political world. I just really have a passion for it. It’s been an amazing experience here. I’ve learned so much,” said Hampton. Hampton has been with Johnson for just five months, but Johnson said she was critical in helping her through the transition when her first executive assistant, Julia Starnes, left in April of this year to return to her home state of Iowa. Starnes served in the position for about a year. “I am really grateful to have had her,” said Johnson who said she knows how hard it is to stay away from politics once you get a taste of it. Hampton worked for CUNA for five years prior to joining Johnson. Her last position with CUNA was as manager of legislative affairs. Before that she worked as a legislative aid for two Republican congressmen. Hampton plans to eventually join the Bush/Cheney re-election campaign. Her immediate political plan is to help a friend running for the board of supervisors in Fairfax county Virginia. Someone from NCUA’s General Counsel staff will assist Johnson for the time being. Johnson said she’s so busy with the all important Member Business Lending regulation slated for the September board meeting that it will take her a little time to begin the search for a new executive assistant.
