Looking back 10 years ago finds the American Bankers Association scheduling a session during its annual conference titled How to Sue a Credit Union. According to ABA Communications Executive Director Virginia Dean, “the goal of ABA’s convention is to offer a peek at the future and arm bankers with what they’ll need to compete successfully. Four days later and you, too, can sue your credit union.” ABA Spokesperson John Hall noted that the inspiration for the session was not the court decision that granted banks the legal standing to sue credit unions. Rather it was the result of bankers having questions on credit union operations. NAFCU spokesperson Pat Keefe said the ABA promotion is “certainly not a surprise. It just goes to show what a bunch of narrow-minded people will do to get attendance at their conference.” CUNA Executive Vice President Chuck Zuver agrees and offered this slightly different perspective. “What this shows is that the credit union movement is nothing but a straw man. We’re being used to distract banks from what ABA is not achieving on Capitol Hill,” said Zuver.
