CHARLOTTE, S.C. – South Carolina Federal Credit Union is the latest mark in what has been a disturbing trend of fraudulent Web sites using the words "credit union". According to SCFCU President/CEO Bob Dargan the bogus Web address, www.southcarolinafederalcreditunion.com, advertised guaranteed credit for a fee of $29.95 and offered various payment options including check mailing and credit payment by Internet and phone. In addition, the site was designed complete with links to offers for low-rate mortgages and refinancing. The Web site, which was launched three weeks ago, may be based out of Australia. Immediately after being alerted about the phony site SCFCU notified the proper authorities and the fake site was shut down.
