SAN DIEGO-Attend any credit union event and you may hear one particular credit union official break out in song. United Services of America Federal Credit Union (San Diego) CEO Mary Cunningham has sung at a past CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference, at credit union chapter meetings, and led her family at her credit union’s annual meeting in the Star Spangled Banner. She first `came out’ to her credit union peers in 1995 when she performed at a memorial service following the Oklahoma City bombing, where the state’s governor also gave an address. Video footage of Cunningham’s performance was later released in a video that CUNA Mutual put together. While Cunningham at one time recently “flirted” with cutting a CD, the lure of the CEO position at USA FCU interrupted those efforts. She said that she might try again, emphasizing that singing for her is a “balm to the soul” and she is not interested in money. “With me, it would never be about money. It’s more about having something to pass on to my grandkids,” Cunningham explained. However, as a vocal music minor in college, she sang with a group of friends for spending money. Now, she sings for friends’ weddings, including former National Credit Union Foundation Executive Director Pat Brownell Sterner’s wedding a year ago, and occasionally at piano bars. Cunningham’s favorite music to sing is blues and some jazz, but admitted that she was child of the `60s and is also partial to classic rock.
