CUNA Thanks Lawmakers for Financial Literacy Legislation

WASHINGTON-CUNA wrote a letter of thanks to Senate Banking Committee Ranking Member Paul Sarbanes (D-Md.) and Senator Jon Corzine (D-N.J.) for introducing legislation designed to bolster financial literacy. S. 1470, The Financial Literacy and Education Coordinating Act proposes increasing financial literacy and education opportunities and calls for the development of a national financial literacy strategy (CU Times August 6). The bill would create an intergovernmental coordinating committee with the goal of improving the financial education opportunities for all Americans. The letter from CUNA President and CEO Dan Mica read, “Financial literacy is an important tool for both students and adults of all ages, incomes and backgrounds. Ensuring individuals have proper financial skills will lead to financially stable families and communities, helping to achieve the American dreams of college, homeownership and retirement security.” Mica also pointed out CUNA’s partnership with the National Endowment for Financial Education.
