WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – How many of us hear "zoom-zoom" and automatically think of Mazda or start tapping our feet to the beat of a Pringles can – ah, the wonder of advertising. A great commercial can make a lasting impression that brings to mind not only the company but maybe even trigger a memory or two in the consumer. Credit Union Times has asked a few credit union marketers to share with readers just what their favorite ads are outside of credit union-land: Many years back Honda introduced a new scooter and it was targeting young people in an urban setting. The commercial had Lou Reed sitting on the seat of the scooter leaning against a lamppost in New York City. Lou Reed just looked at the camera and asked "Why walk when you can ride?" Since his big hit was "Walk on the Wild Side" it just always struck a chord with me and really hit the mark. Kerry Lewis Vice President of Marketing nuVision CU My favorite ad campaign of all times is Geico Insurance with the Gecko Spokesperson because I love the play on the name with the Gecko in the ads. I think the humor is what makes that ad campaign really classic. My favorite ad they did was when the Gecko was called out of the shower by the wrong number. I think that has happened to everyone and having the little Gecko in his towel and shower cap really allowed everyone to relate to him on a personal level, so the name of the advertiser sticks with you. Katy Jett Marketing Director UT FCU My favorite advertising campaign is a classic – Wendy's "Where's the beef". I know that is a favorite for a lot of people. I loved the candor of the little old lady which is what made the commercial so whimsical…and I think we can all relate to them because we all have an aunt or a grandma who could have been cast in this spot. I've seen a lot of funny commercials…but do I remember what they were selling or why? No. That's why this is such a great campaign – it is clever because it is funny, memorable and clearly conveyed why Wendy's was different that the rest of the fast food chains. It's rare to find a commercial with all of these elements that people are still talking about years later. Felicia DiRocco Marketing Director First Atlantic FCU My all time favorite is the Gap Swing Dance commercial with the stop motion photography. It is memorable because it is groundbreaking for the time, eye catching and still very classy. People would look at it and wonder how did they do that and the ad tied in nicely with their sales. Jerry Sparrow Marketing Manager Watermark CU Among the most memorable would have to be the first series of Mike's Hard Lemonade spots, particularly the killer whale commercial. Many people took these silly commercials far too seriously, but for me they were good clean subversive fun. What Mike's was really doing was spoofing macho beer ads, and they did it brilliantly. Their memorable images, sophomoric humor, and a great tag line – "A hard day calls for a hard lemonade… Make it Mike's" puts these early Mike's spots on my list of all-time favorites.
